„umwelt’s 12inch “… city” from 1999 was one of the most impressive 12inches i had at that time and i played the shit out of it. it was dark and very emotional, it was abstract but also driving at the same time. this was 1999 though, before discogs and before facebook and all the other platforms people have now to do research on artists they like and follow their work. at that time it was the record shop – and that was it. nobody knew this guy though, and i didn’t get my hands on any of the following releases, so in my world there was no follow-up to this record ever and i thought it would remain a one-off gem in my record box. until by some coincident i recently discovered he was still around and had actually released numerous releases in the meantime. i was very excited and contacted him straight away and ended up booking him for krake festival in the same year. undoubtedly his set was one of the best of the whole festival! he took the roof off the place with his mix of raw electro, industrial and rave and everybody was talking about it afterwards, saying it was the highlight of the festival! talking to him i learnt, that most of the tracks he played were his own, mostly unreleased. he produces without computers, all his tracks are single takes, there is no editing, no mixing afterwards, he only has a stereo track recording which is what it is. he owns a cutting machine which he uses to cut dubplates from his tracks, which he then plays out during his sets. this whole information about this very unique artistic approach just killed it for me, and since working with him was so nice as well, i asked him for a demo for killekill and its labels and was hoping for tracks i could make a great 12&#8243,, of. i got 14 tracks and after weeks of trying to pick the best, i finally realized i held one of the best electro albums ever in my hand – banging beats and the balls to go big and epic, subtle melodies, drama, funk – this album has got it all, and what’s most important, the music on it is the exact opposite of so much other music nowadays: it is emotional, it tells a story, it is easily recognizable and it is not interchangeable. it’s just umwelt.“ nico deuster

ensos 4th installment is a 3-tracker which bears the distinct signature of intrepid soul: electro, acid, hypnotic modulated synths. side a comprises 2 tracks: e.c. nature and rikimbili. the first track features a driving bassline and a hypnotic electro-ish synth theme. rikimbli is more playful, with glitchy percussions and an acid-esque synth theme. its like the marching theme of an army of robots. side b features idiogenic, which shows a more deep and melodic side of the artist. all 3 tracks are fine examples of intrepid soul’s exquisite analogue production and we believe they fit perfectly with what enso is all about.

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

it took me a couple of years get invited to christophe de groot’s (aka circadian rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his sonic archive. but time tells and basic moves 02 is what came out. the two tracks were recorded at earguard studio in brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons. “frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo.
i’m super happy i could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master dat tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. we had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini dat cassette. after a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “a dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”. “house speaker call” originated in proto-techno forms. christophe never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. as a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit. tune your cells into his vibrations and get ready for these two timeless club tracks.

multi culti s lucid-lifestyle dreamer peter power takes us on a free-wheeling trip to the motherland on afro damba. the irish-born voodoohop resident has returned from the jungles of bahia with a fresh ep of primal party tracks sampling voices and rhythms from across africa and it s neighbouring islands, producing what is easily his most club-oriented work to date. whereas his tracks for voodoohop were spiritual flute-heart-openers, these are neo-pagan mating-ritual floor-fillers. the rhythm is set to tribal chug, with rollicking percussion, reverb-soaked vocals, and all the fun jangly bells & bits you expect to be hanging off such a well-traveled producer. if that weren t enough, we enlisted romanian-dance-duo khidja to rework adama waro resident mix-lord dreems also weighs in with a subtle remix of dansakoni, gently upping the tempo and tweaking the knobs in selfless service of the original groove.

fresh from the success of their ‘past / present / future’ release, we march on, with berlin-based italian christopher ledger the man responsible for their label’s 41st release. the ‘percezione and retrospettiva’ ep sees ledger in flying form, as he props up with two dexterous, thoughtfully executed records that speak volume of his ability to craft atmospheric sounds. opening up the release is the sounds of ‘retrospettiva 2’, a future leaning techno jam that again wonderfully fits the brouqade aesthetic. clearly indebted to sci-fi spheres, this one is very much cut from a detroit cloth, with a steely finesse that lurks from the get go. a track that brings the listener on an endless journey, it comes some deep harmonic vibes. all things told, this is an ep of various contrasting sounds, ledger’s debut for brouqade is a stunning example of what can happen when producers think outside the box. the b side consists of ‘percezione attiva’. harmonic, blissful tones abound throughout, made all the more meaningful by a slew of gentle, melancholic piano chords that really pull on the heartstrings. a light and hazy experimental piece, the track forces parallels with other masters of suspense. culminating with a more traditional 4/4 vibe, this unusual turn only enhances the producer’s standing as a man willing to take risks.

bruno pronsato returns with his first new artist album in 6 years. entitled us drag, it’s the follow-up to 2011’s critically acclaimed lovers do— lauded by pitchfork as a “striking and massive statement,” and decorated with a 4.5/5 rating by resident advisor. the new record, which finds the ex-punk rock drummer exploring dense, interlocking rhythms and unorthodox tuning systems, was recorded in berlin during the second half of 2016, and features a collaboration with liars’ frontman angus andrew. after the vast, complex arrangements of his previous albums, the 9 recordings on us drag are relatively more upfront and direct, with a particular focus on bells, tuned percussion and the sequential circuits six-trak synthesizer (used to create many of the album’s synth parts). pronsato’s ongoing collaboration with yonatan levi continues, with the israeli bassist appearing on the album’s second track

oberst & buchner are next up on freeride millenium and the two bavaria born, vienna based producers deliver an ep that offers their interpretation of what modern summer togetherness sounds like. the talented pair started making music together aged 15 and aim to cook up emotionally driven jams. they do so on labels like heimlich, underyourskin records, schönbrunner perlen, lokd, and always get the juices going, as they do once again here. beginning with the brilliant greg we dive into a breakbeat bath of summery chords as playful claves dance on the horizon. it is a melodically rich track with spiritual feelings that really bliss you out. on the moodier emile night time arrives and warm chords mix with jangling, organic glass and percussive tinkles that reflect rays of light. it s a perfectly jazzy and loose number that really suspends you in a rueful place. last but not least, embrace is a fluid intergalactic convention with sparse drum kicks weighed down by sombre synths. a skittish, dubstep style groove then comes in and elevates the track with gentle guitar licks and slithering synths adding colour, and overall it has the same zoned out feel as a thousand-yard stare. this is a brilliant mood ep that mixes up the synthetic with the organic, creating some fascinating grooves as a result. the release once again features original artwork from the ever talented daniel rajcsanyi. thanks for purchasing a real copy!

nouveaunoise is the name given to the audio collages created mostly by two people in the rural west of ireland, niall conway and conor gaffney. what you are supposed to think: veteran crate diggers. rare records so untouched and ripe for sampling that they drip essential mix. moments of melodies spliced and sampled meticulously tiered with break-beating grooves. alchemists of eclectic musical source and sampling technique. the reality: reels and reels of recorded experiments on dysfunctional equipment. instruments created, copied and acquired from distant travels. a healthy fascination with boards of canada and my bloody valentine. a cultural background just far away from the hive as to offer the whole project space to breathe it s own breath

there is enough brilliance to choose from, but it all starts with 15 minutes of superiority on the 5x3 loop tracks on the a-side with that typical sleeparchive sound. all containing disturbing drums followed by upperclass sequences which keeps on going.
the b-side starts with title track letter of resignation. is this a clue from sleeparchive? the future will tell. what we do know is that it continues where the a-side stopped. again heavy hitting drums followed by a frisk sequence. he continues this formula on the 2nd track called solitary drinker. and above all we give you a small bonus with 2 locked groove presents: sleep cycle 17 & 18.

from time to time, you hear an ep and instantly can sense that it’s going to be significant. sad girl seasonal affective disorder does what few manage to do - it tells us not only a story from different perspectives but describes the journey of the heart and mind when losing someone we love - the conflicting emotions when we hurt and the evolution of emotions we experience as we heal. it achieves this by using a rich and diverse collection of sounds as its vocabulary, and a brilliant integration and structure as its grammar. also, this strategy manages to give each track its unique character, allowing them to stand on their own.

cementing his reputation as the star toaster with the small but popular el paso sound system, based in the waltham park area, dennis alcapone was one of the first deejays to rise to prominence following u roy’s breakthrough in the late 1960s. born dennis smith in the rural district of culloden, he became immersed in sound system culture after settling in western kingston. once el paso became big on the sound system circuit, dental technician-turned-producer keith hudson brought him into the studio for his debut recordings, which led to a debut album for studio one and hit material for duke reid, some cut in concert with his deejay sparring partner, lizzy. alcapones longstanding links with bunny lee yielded the excellent guns don’t argue album, first issued in 1972, on which the toaster raps with style over some of lees all-time greatest rhythms, including delroy wilsons better must come, john holts left with a broken heart and slim smiths rendition of the temptations soul classic ain’t too proud to beg.

the next set of the japanese musical tales on hhatri s imprint comes from takecha (aka takeshi fukushima), a producer who has played a part in creating some of the seminal pieces of house music that have originated from japan. his music is characterised by the perfect marriage of experimentation and emotional content. for those that know, takecha s first ep kind of deep released on his own imprint, gwm records, in 1995 is a secret gem among japanese house music collectors. only 100 copies were ever available and it is a subtle reminder of what and how deep house should sound like. takecha provides no less in a tale of shiga four gorgeous tracks that provide some insight into his own creative, albeit humble genius in his approach to producing music. fresh off the press are three previously unreleased tracks with the addition of freak out. released in 1998. tip!

25th anniversary reissue of en vogue’s second studio album, originally released in 1992.

seafoam is back and will stay with us for a little while. after the revelation of his latest productions, -lost tape 98 project- presents some special tracks produced in the late 90s / early 2000s. when we got this original dat of -hybrid- release in order to re-edit it, what a big surprise to discover other original tracks that were never released. so we decided to sign our 3 favorite tracks on rue de plaisance s sub-label : « rue de plaisance re-issue ».

a brand new instalment in the trans afryka series, that is loosely inspired by the sounds of the black continent and devoted to club-oriented afro-house. riding the waves of success with sold out volume 1, zambon employed three talented producers to bring more goods to the table. transatlantyk regulars like dj dook and universo are joined by a newcomer tamten and together deliver a bomb of an ep! aptly titled afro acid by dj dook is exactly what it says on the sleeve - raw dj tool with squelchy samples, mantra-like vocal loop and focused vibe. think of an soundtrack to a futuristic version of apocalypse now. just the perfect peaktime beats to heat the party a little bit more. praise song by universo is built on a wandering bassline reminiscent of malian blues with tribal chants, penny whistles and various sorts of percussions on top. this beautiful groove rolls and rolls without end, like an endless summer. ukukhnaya by tamten is the most atmospheric out of the three, fusing new age midi sounds with the vibes of south african deep house.

working with technical limitations, metro skim masters the art of omission showing that what can be left out is just as important as what is included. momentum is achieved with ticking 909 hi-hats and grumbling basslines before being thrown into whole tracks of beat-less techno sequences.

emerging from what sounds like the unknown depths of outer space, new artist icore drops a debut ep on osiris music uk lled with ve exercises in hypnotic, polyrhythmic tension. the a-side’s two tracks ’sigil’ and ‘status field’ feel like two parts of a whole, each establishing a minimal, kick-heavy march in 6/8 that would perfectly ll the cavernous hull of an abandoned mining vessel, lurching through empty parts of the galaxy to the sound of ominous drones and malfunctioning, high-end bleeps. the b-side is more cinematic in its scope, with opener ‘substance from shadow’ summoning a distinctly b-movie vibe in its melody, before both ‘claimed by night’ and ‘axiom’ retreat into darker, more ambient territory, the former thick in sub- bass kicks, the latter ramping up the dread with unnerving repetition.

another cornerstone record from the mighty strictly rhythm catalogue, waterfalls / feel it is an essential example of the deeper, more melodic style of house that emanated from nyc / nj in the early to mid 90s. originally released in 1991 the ep features the production style of andrew rags richardson with some co-production assistance from one roger sanchez. it perfectly encapsulates the style of music that would be played at clubs like the loft, shelter, zanzibar and beyond, a more emotive and soulful strain of house that gives a respectful nod to it s disco roots. waterfalls / feel it has long been the toast of house aficionados and is most definitely a record that will still have people rushing the booth asking what s this? an evergreen slab of wax indeed. essential sounds for the heads.

a burning desire to just fuckin rhyme. on my last couple of albums i challenged myself with regard to formats, trying to push the envelope as far as what exactly constitutes a rap record. talking (bleep) and problems were my last two lead singles, both markedly unconventional. i adore both of those songs and i adore both of those albums specifcally for the new creative fulfllment i enjoyed while making them. there’s much more of that to come, but after spending 3 years outside of the box i was left with a burning desire to just fuckin rhyme. thats veins. - homeboy sandman

here comes the new black loops ep! and by now you know what to expect: these irresistible rolling groove patterns with that unique warm black loops-feeling. that special vibe that made black loops one of the leading artists on toy tonics. by now its exactly four years that they released their debut ep right now on the gomma sublabel. they did four eps on toy tonics since then - followed by selected releases on neo vinyl, pets and gruuv records

fouk are finally back on heist after their great ‘kill frenzy’ ep in 2014 and have taken mount liberation unlimited along for a remix. we’ve been waiting patiently for new material, challenging the guys to take the signature ‘fouk’ sound to the next level. fouk’s brilliance has been obvious on recent work for their own label outplay and razor ‘n tape, as well as their respective solo projects. we’ve kept a close connection, teaming up whenever possible for heist showcases, with highlights in amsterdam’s “claire” and paris’ “concrete-. seeing their work and enthusiasm made it abundantly clear that it would only be a matter of time before they’d show us what the next step would look -or better yet- sound like. anticipation ran high but boy, do fouk deliver. the excellent ‘with lasers’ ep still very much portrays their own style of loose, live percussion and many layers of funk, but they’ve expanded their vision and even toughened up a bit. their new taste for grit and an interest in the heavier side of funk is probably most evident on the opener ‘f3000&#8242,,,,,, where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush cosmic synth stabs. title track ‘with lasers’ is more of a classic fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with… erm… lasers. lots of them. the b side ‘see you on the other side’ sets a different pace, carefully blending guitar licks, rhodesy chords and vocal chops into a lovely groove that feels just as carefree and improvised as it feels exciting. swedish synth nerds “mount liberation unlimited” ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy -pepe bradock goes balearic- track where airy echoed guitars take turns with some equally dreamy and evocative pads.

now an essential part of the metalheadz family, artificial intelligence are back with the reprisal ep.their 2015 album on the label showed exactly what the duo are all about - blissful liquid and chunky basslines - something that was further showcased in last years shrine ep. the reprisal ep is more of the same but perhaps slightly refined, with reprisal and intimacy leading the way on the dreamy and sometimes euphoric side of things, whilst the darker sounds of sicario and force of habit transform the release into an extremely well rounded project

nice price deal !!! plucked from huge classic rave tracks. these old rave samples are mixed up with proper rough-edged kicks and drumloops, turning them into deadly tools. anyone infected with the techno / tech-house virus and some knowledge of what happened back in the days, will be flying through the roof when one of these monsters is dropped

lf rmx arrives as new non-profit platform which will share only edits originally made by len faki for playing in his dj sets. what began as small technical tweaks has since grown into passionate work, the edits eventually becoming an important staple to the special feel and flow of the figure head’s well-renowned approach to djing. the series’ first release features the rework of dj bone’s 2016 slammer ‘black patterns’, whose heavily rolling nature the hardspace mix builds upon. keeping the oldschool drums’ weighty feel, len faki gives his a edit a more compact shell and punchy edge. the centerpiece piano stabs also reign over this version, albeit rising in a glimming, glistening fashion, making it a definite choice for this summer. the hardspace tool on the other side steers clear of piano and vocal, rather developing a lively sequence of unmistakenly len faki-styled, vigorous percussive permutations. as this project is very much a matter of the heart, and as much about honoring the orignal artists’ work as it is about sharing the edits with a wider audience, there will be no monetary gain involved. instead all the proceeds will be donated fully to straßenkinder e.v., a berlin organization fighting against child poverty
